Methods for Filtering Chlorine Out of Water

Most people don’t know this, but our water supply has other chemicals besides chlorine. We reason that it is due to its pungent odor and unpleasant flavor. Despite its unpleasant flavor, this chemical has been used for many years to eliminate aquatic disease-causing microbes.

The fact that this chemical is used to disinfect water is no reason to accept drinking it. An efficient filtration system can get rid of it. However, it would be best not to settle for any old system, as your water supply may contain additional pollutants. Before we explore how to get rid of chlorine, let’s discuss another common chemical molecule found in water.

Many municipal water supplies include trihalomethanes (THMs), a class of chemical compounds. Chlorine reacts with organic and inorganic substances found in nature to produce them.

These waste products activate free radicals, harming cells and possibly leading to cancer if left unchecked. According to several studies, breast cancer patients have THM levels in their fatty tissue that are 50-60% greater than those of healthy controls.

Therefore, it is crucial to look for a filtration system that not only removes chlorine but also removes THMs and other pollutants. Systems, including reverse osmosis, distillation, and carbon-based purification gadgets, are widely available.

The printing and photography industries have relied on water purified through reverse osmosis and distillation for decades because of naturally occurring trace minerals in that water. These devices are now trending for home use. They are excellent at eliminating chlorine and other common impurities but aren’t as good at getting rid of man-made toxins.

Devices that use reverse osmosis to purify water work by forcing H2O through a semipermeable membrane, where the pollutants are left behind. However, there is a catch. There are man-made substances whose molecules are even smaller than water’s. So, what does this entail? Ultimately, these chemicals do make it into the water you drink. Water is also wasted in reverse osmosis systems. They waste between two and three gallons for every gallon used.

Distillation purification methods can’t even remove some chemicals. Why? Distillation units remove impurities from water by boiling it into a vapor and then condensing it. Chemicals having lower boiling temperatures than water make it into drinking water. However, pollutants with higher temperatures than waters do not.

Many distinct types of carbon-based filtration systems are available. It is vital to look for models of these filtration systems that filter more than chlorine while allowing natural trace minerals to pass through. Essential to meeting your dietary requirements, trace elements are often overlooked.

When looking for a more affordable option to bottled water, some consumers will settle for pitchers with carbon filters. However, the efficiency of portable filtration systems is often lower than that of permanently installed ones.

A multi-stage filtering system is one sort of very efficient unit. When using carbon-containing media, this setup excels. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, carbon is the gold standard for filtering many different pollutants and parasites like Cryptosporidium and Giardia. Specific multi-stage filtering systems also preserve your body’s vital trace minerals for adequate sustenance.

Now you know the answer. Look for a system or technique that does more than remove chlorine from water; ideally, it would also filter out synthetic chemicals and other impurities. Also, it needs to keep the healthy trace minerals that occur naturally. If you do this instead of buying bottled water, you’ll protect your health and save money.
