Instructions for Constructing a Birthing Box

13

To begin, I’ll address a concern that many readers may have. What exactly is a whelping box? Whelping boxes are a type of wooden box used by pet owners and breeders to deliver their animals. The finished dimensions for a large dog should be about 4 feet by 5 feet by 4 feet. A medium-sized dog, for instance, would require a box that is 3 feet by 4 feet by 3 feet. You’ll need four sheets of OSB measuring 3/4 inches thick by four feet wide and five feet long for a big dog. Avoid using treated wood, which off-gases chemicals that could harm animals and people in closed spaces. A paintbrush and roller with a paint tray, #6 or #8 wood screws 1 1/2″ long, a paint tray, a medium-sized barrel bolt, two heavy-duty door hinges, and nineteen feet of 2″ x 6″ boards are also required for this project.

The bottom of the box is our starting point. Reduce the length of one OSB sheet to measure precisely 5 feet, 6 inches. Now, using the OSB wood’s width as a guide, cut two pieces of 2″ x 4″ board to a length of about 4 feet. Attach the boards to the OSB at the 4′ end, standing them upright so that there is a distance of about 3 5/8″ from the inside of the OSB to the top of the 2″ x 4″ board. There should be about 5 foot 2 inches of space between the 2″ x 4″ boards; cut and attach two more boards of this size. What you have created should resemble a small sandbox. The next step is to attach two pieces of OSB measuring 5’6″ in length to the 2″ x 4″ boards measuring 5’2″ in width along the perimeter of the room. Make a back by attaching a piece of OSB cut into two 4′ x 4′ pieces to a 2″ x 4″ board of the floor.

Please read this section carefully. Use screws to fasten two 5-foot-long pieces of 2″ x 6″ lumber to the floor and sideboards made of 2″ x 4″ boards. To fill the space between the two boards, you screwed them together and cut two more 2″ x 6″ pieces. Screw one of the boards to the OSB and the 2″ x 4″ board at the back. Join the remaining 2″ x 4″ board, which will serve as the lid, to the other 2″ x 6″ board. Before you begin cutting the 2″ x 4″ boards for the box’s corners, measure the finished length of the box, which should be around 3 feet, 7 inches. When installing the boards, make sure the screws do not go through the 2″ x 4″s and into the inside of the box as you cut them to size. A sharp screw end, for instance, poking out from inside the box might cause serious injury to any animal housed there.

The door opened at last… The final OSB panel, roughly 4′ x 4′ in size, should be measured to match the door opening. Now, join the two hinges and position the board for the door, using your best judgment. Check that the door’s opening and closing features are working well. The remaining 2″ x 4″ must be reduced in size so it may be used to brace the door. The next step is the distance between the newly installed door’s four 2″ x 4″s. Make sure the door has enough support by

measuring, cutting, and installing 2″ x 4″s in the center. Add 2″ x 4″ to the outside of the container at the hinge on the door’s swing side. Put the door’s locking barrel bolt in place now. Make sure the wood is free of dust and dirt, and look inside for anything that could cause injury to a pet. It is recommended to apply two coats of primer, with drying time in between, and then two coats of paint, with drying time in between. If you followed the directions carefully, you should now have your whelping box.
